The Peacock is a male Indian Peafowl (Pavo cristatus). It is well-known for its impressive display of colorful tail feathers. The male uses these feathers to attract females. The larger the display the more likely that male is to earn the opportunity to mate. Although attractive to females, these traits are also disabilities for the male. The long train of feathers makes flight more difficult and the bright colors also draw more attention to the male, including unwanted attention from potential predators. If a male can survive in spite of these significant limitations, he demonstrates to females his strength and cunning, which is maybe what really attracts her to him. In the end, a female is a looking for the most eligible male to mate with and create offspring. A male that demonstrates he can still thrive, despite disadvantages in a sometimes harsh world, is strong assurance that her next generation will inherit these important traits.
